The Gracie Way
Starting, we have the Gracie Method, which is a great way to tie your belt. With the Gracie Method, you will have the opportunity to experience how the founders of Jiu-Jitsu tied their belts.
You will need to close your BJJ GI with the left lapel running over the right part of your Kimono. Next, you will want to find the halfway points, you’ll want to make sure you get both of those strands in front, and they will need to be equal lengths.
This is a tad bit different from the other methods we’re going to explain because, with this method, you won’t be securing all layers of the belt. The belt will be tied directly. The ends of the belt aren’t looped together through layers; instead, it is directly tied in the front.
Mind you; the Gracie Method is rarely seen today as it is one of the most insecure ways to tie a belt.
The BJJ Method
This is a popular method with BJJ practitioners and Judokas who wish to keep their gi for the duration of the roll. The BJJ method will leave you with a super tight belt. Competitors love this method because it is hard to get undone – undone belts can get in the way during the match. Originally, this is the way. Judokas tied their belts.
Starting, locate the middle of your belt. You will need to tie it all around the back until you have both ends up front. As usual, both ends will need to be the same length. It would be best if you got the right piece over the left, and that same strand should go under the rest of your layers. Once you do this, don’t pull it too tight because you will want to keep that loop to put the other strand. Afterward, pull both of the strands tight.
If you want to look good with a secure belt, then the Diamond method is the way to go. What’s cool about this method is that it won’t take a lot of time to tie it. When posing for a picture, many companies ask the models to use this method right here.
Start by locating the middle of your belt. Find the halfway mart and loop it around you. Now, please take the right strand and put it over the left and under the layers. The other strand will go into the loop that you created when you placed the right strand. Not only does the loop go into the loop, but also make sure you put it between the layers. Last, pull both of the strands tight so that your gi is secure.
The Basic Method
If you’re new to the game, then you may want to take the easiest approach to tie your Jiu-Jitsu belt, and this is understandable. Many beginners choose the basic method; then once they master that, they move on to something unique. The basic method is easy to follow and get the job done. This is a fast method, but it’s also more likely to come undone.
Find the halfway point on your belt and wrap it around your waist (the belt should go below your belly button). Once both ends are in the front, adjust it so that both of the ends are the same lengths. From here, you will want to take the right strand and fold it over the left. Afterward, the right strand will need to go under all layers – this will ensure that the belt doesn’t come undone. Once you have all of the layers secured, you can tie a knot.
The Karate Method
People who enjoy Karate have a different way of tying their belts. Practitioners have developed a pretty neat method. When thinking about security, it offers about the same level as the basic method. It’s not as secure as the BJJ method, but it’s tighter than the Gracie Method.
For the Karate Method, you’ll want to take one end of the belt and hold it at your hip on the left side. The other end should be wrapped around your back and forward, going over the first end. With this, you will have only one strand hanging upfront. From there, take that strand and wrap it under all layers from bottom to top. For the knot, just as you did with the basic method.

With these three methods in front of you, you’re probably wondering which method you should use to tie a Jiu-Jitsu belt. When it comes to tying your belt, there are many things you should consider. For example, if you’re fighting someone and you know that you play a good lapel guard, it would be a good idea to make sure your belt is tight.
However, if you’re in a competition, you may have a strict referee who will require you to tie your belt within 20-seconds. If you go past those 20-seconds, then the referee will penalize you.
